The Diamond In The Rough: The New Jack Swing Session Redux

New Jack Swing fuses the rhythms, samples, and production techniques of hip hop and dance-pop with the urban contemporary sound of R&B. The new jack swing style developed as many previous music styles did, by combining elements of older styles with newer sensibilities. It used R&B style vocals sung over hip hop and dance-pop style influenced instrumentation. The sound of new jack swing comes from the hip hop "swing" beats created by drum machine, and hardware samplers, which were popular during the Golden Age of Hip Hop, with contemporary R&B style singing. psychology pays homage to #newjackswing with this special edition of Diamond In The Rough

Stillmatic Celebrates 10 Years

December 18th marks the 10th anniversary of the release of Stillmatic, the 5th studio album by Queens, New York MC, Nas.

Stillmatic would receive a 5 mic rating from The Source and served as a commercial and critical success that helped re-establish Nas' career, following a period of critical disappointment with the releases of I Am… and Nastradamus.

It contains classic tracks like One Mic & Ether. The later is herald as one of Hip Hop's most ruthless diss tracks as it is considered the knock out punch in the Beef between Nas & Jay-Z.

Mama Said Knock You Out celebrates its 20th anniversary

August 27th marks the 20th anniversary of the release of LL Cool J's 4th studio album, Mama Said Knock You Out.

The album spawned four hit singles: The Boomin' System; Around the Way Girl; 6 Minutes Of Pleasure & the hard-hitting title track, which to this day is STILL one of the most hard hitting Hip Hop songs released(When Bob Dylan recites a verse from MSKYO, you know it's a classic).

Although LL specifically tells us, "Don't Call It A Comeback!"; MSKYO was made as a comeback album after the critically disapointing Walking With A Panther. The album helped restore LL's reputation as a hip hop icon. In 1998, it was listed in The Source's 100 Best Rap Albums

To help celebrate the anniversary of MSKYO, which is also my personal favorite album from LL, psychology digs in the archives and blows the dust off a classic edition of DITR.

Tune in to K103 radio tonight (Aug. 26) at mdinight for The Diamond In The Rough: The LL Cool J Session.
