Judgement Day

3Style MTL has arrived.. The hours & hours of practicing all come down to tonight. I can't tell you how many times I thought I had a set I liked only to rethink it and start all over again. Tonight's set is version 7.0 AT LEAST!!!

Here are a few shots of my thought/work process on figuring out a mere 15 minute set for tonight.

The team over at Midnight Jitney recently posted interviews with some of tonight's DJs. Here is psychology's interview:

State your name: DJ Psychology

How did you get into this?

Music is in the family… I was the kid at house parties who tried to find a way to have the music flow flawlessly. Back then it was all about cassettes so cueing stuff up wasn’t as easy as it is now. Before parties, I’d cue up my tapes at home so all the hot songs would be set and there wouldn’t be a delay between songs. Then I learned about a mixer and how I could seam songs together…and the mixer naturally led me to the turntables and vinyl. Growing up, there was tons of vinyl in my parent’s music collection. I was no stranger to records and the seduction of a record was too impossible to resist. How can you not want to touch one? They are big & round…so I hooked up the family turntable to the mixer…And as they say, the rest is history.

What’s your ideal set-up to rock a crowd?

I’m not too picky. I’ll play on whatever is available, but things run smoother than Lando Calrissian when the following is available: 2 Technics 1200SL turntables, Rane 57 or Pioneer 800 mixer, a couple bottles of water and cans of red bull (aka the psychology package).

First song that made you flip?

Herbie Hancock’s Rockit (still gives me goosebumps)
MJ’s Thriller album (that album is as close to perfection as it gets)

Last song that made you flip?

The production of Kanye West & J Dilla (inspiring)
Kidz In The Hall: “Drivin’ down the block” (awesome sample & drum pattern)
DJ Class: “I’m the Ish” (More people need to dance to this song!!)
Radiohead’s performance at this year’s Grammy awards…(wow)

Most memorable DJ moment?

I have been fortunate enough to have many memorable moments including performing at the Bell Centre with Hilary Duff, opening for The Roots, Nas, Wu-Tang, spinning for Justin Timberlake’s birthday party.

What song will you never drop?

Never say never…

The perfect DJ is…

DJ Jazzy Jeff. Even when he makes a mistake, it’s flawless.

A message for Saturday night:

I’m too old to talk trash. So I’ll let my hands do the talking this Saturday. Respect the DJ
