The Diamond In The Rough: The A Tribe Called Quest Session

Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest made its debut at the Sundance Film Festival last year.

Directed by Michael Rapaport, the film follows A Tribe Called Quest in 2008, when the group reunited to perform sold-out concerts across the country, almost ten years after the release of their last album, The Love Movement. As the director travels with the band members, Rapaport captures the story of how tenuous their relationship has become; and how their personal differences and unresolved conflicts continue to be a threat to their creative cohesion.

In addition to chronicling the past, present and uncertain future of the band, the film includes interviews from the Beastie Boys, Pharrell, Mos Def, Santigold, Monie Love, Pete Rock, Large Professor, De La Soul, The Jungle Brothers and Common, all of whom attribute some combination of love, respect, and inspiration drawn from the legacy of A Tribe Called Quest.

The film will now make its Canadian debut and first screening in Montreal this Sunday at the Club Soda. The documentary film will also be accompanied by several perfomances, including a legendary performance by ATCQ member, Phife Dawg.

The Roots: Undun

Lucky 13.. The Roots release their 13TH studio album, Undun, this week.

Undun is about a semi-fictional drug dealer named Redford Stephens, who, in the words of the Roots, "becomes criminal, but he wasn't born criminal. He's not the nouveau, exotic, primitive, bug-eyed gunrunner... He's actually thoughtful and is neither victim nor hero." Early reviews of the album have the critics smiling as well as calling it their Kid A. These are bold words in my eyes, as Kid A is one of my favorite albums of all time.. However, I see their point.. The album may turn away the average music consumer, but those of us who may not tune into commercial radio on a daily basis should appreciate The Roots' Concept album. Their is even a iPhone app containing a series of photos, music videos and interviews that act as a biography of sorts for Redford Stephens & the album.

On November 8th, 2011, the hip hop world lost a pioneer & an icon. Dwight Arrington Myers, better known as Heavy D passed away due to pneumonia.

Heavy D & the Boyz were the first group signed to Uptown Records; releasing 6 albums with the label which Heavy D later became president. He helped to develop rhythm-and-blues singer Mary J. Blige's career and hired Sean Combs as an intern. During this time, Myers also developed the sensational R&B boy band Soul for Real, and was the executive producer and principal writer of several songs on the group's breakout album, Candy Rain. He later became the senior vice president at Universal Music.

OK, I admit it. I'm bad for the environment. I Like Harleys and pick up trucks. I have never been a fan of small cars or any kind of sports car. I'm happy with the body I have and don't need to make up for anything through an automobile ending with a vowel..

With the family getting bigger and the offspring a few years away from Hockey practice, small cars aren't really an option at the psychology household. That being said; parking the pickup truck in the city on the way to a gig is never fun. The Nissan Juke-R would be a perfect get to a gig, and get to a gig FAST; car..

Claiming to go from 0-100km/h in 3.6 seconds, the Juke-R is a 480 hp all-wheel drive crossover. Nissan took the 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 and six-speed dual-clutch transmission from the GT-R and put it in the body of the Juke, creating one very powerful little car.

When most people think of Mobb Deep, the first album that comes to mind is their sophmore album, The Infamous. And admitedly, I do too. However, before their ridiculous decision to join G-Unit; Mobb Deep was one of Hip Hop's most consistent groups when it came to quality albums. Dark production, haunting lyrics; these were the ingredients to a Mobb Deep album that left the hairs on your arms standing.

On November 19, 1996; Prodigy & Havoc released their 3rd studio album, Hell On Earth. This album amy not have had the success or power of The Infamous, but it is considered by many critics to be among the duo's best work. The album continues where The Infamous left off. Production is handled by Havoc and is so dark that I try to avoid being in any tall buildings wehn listening to it..

I can't believe it's already been 15 years since I was blown away by the sounds of Entroducing....

Released on November 19, 1996; DJ Shadow's debut studio album is structured completely out of sampled elements, including hip hop, jazz, funk, psychedelia, old television shows, interviews and percussion tracks. The entirety of the album was composed on an MPC60. Entroducing is adored by critics & fans. It has appeared on various best album lists including being #7 on Pitchfork's 100 Best albums of the 90s.

This album is a MUST HAVE fro any truly serious music aficionado. A classic on multiple levels, Entroducing can still leave you inspired; 15 years later.

You could almost call these trailers to the release of The Roots latest album, Undun; which hits stores & itunes on December 6th.

Undun is an existential re-telling of the short life of one Redford Stephens (1974-1999). Through the use of emotives and Redford's internal dialogues the album seeks to illustrate the intersection of free will and prescribed destiny as it plays out 'on the corner'. Utilizing a reverse narrative arc, the album begins as the listener finds Redford disoriented -postmortem- and attempting to make sense of his former life. As he moves through its pivotal moments he begins to deconstruct all that has led to his (and our own) coming "Undun".

Chicken and Pesto Soup

The cold months are around the corner, and there is no better way to warm up than a bowl of soup. There is something soulful about a bowl of homemade soup, no matter what kind tickles your fancy.

Chicken Soup is a classic on numerous levels; but adding pesto just brings it to another level. I'm not sure where pesto was 15 years ago, but it seems that the pesto craze is here to stay and I for one am a fan. I have pretty much abandonned all other types of sauces...

Try this out next time you need to warm up your soul..

2 teaspoons oil
1/2 cup carrot , julienned or shredded
8 oz. leftover cooked chicken
1 large clove garlic, minced
5 cups chicken broth
1 1/2 t oregano flakes
4 oz. baby spinach, coarsely chopped
15 oz. can chick peas, rinsed and drained
Salt and pepper to taste
2 T prepared pesto (available in the refrigerator section of your market)

Heat oil in soup pan and add carrot and chicken and heat for 2 minutes. Add garlic and cook 1 minute. Add broth, oregano, salt and pepper and heat 2 minutes. Add spinach and chick peas and cook 3 minutes. Add the pesto sauce and cook 5 minutes so all flavors blend.
